Heartbroken: Honoring Black Lives
On the occasion of George Floyd’s funeral, I am heartbroken for him, his family, and our nation. I was profoundly saddened and appalled to hear of yet another senseless killing of a Black man at the hands of those who are meant to protect us all.
I believe it is a historic opportunity for reflection. A moment to listen and learn from one another, to understand how racism has shaped America.
But we have been here before and our stereotypes are deeply rooted. A legacy of slavery means that black life is devalued and that we often see one another through a lens of mistrust.
The inequities born of this history include a lack of healthcare access. In the current crisis, Black people are 13% of the US population but we are 24% of COVID deaths.
I am hopeful when I see diverse people in peaceful protest, spanning generations. For this moment, I’m sharing an aspiration for our larger humanity and a video tribute.
Let’s find a way to work together so that our country lives up to its founding principles and ideals.
